AGA/GTI SCADA Security Initiative

Dennis Holstein, Publisher
January 2002

The American Gas Association (AGA) and the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) have started a new initiative with the goal to develop a SCADA Security specification (psuedo-standard). They are on a fast-track schedule to produce a draft by the end of May 2002.

Organizationally they have setup a website and Email service to facilitate the exchange of information between members serving on each subcommittee. At the meeting in December, the need for several subcommittees were identified:

Algorithm, protocol and architecture selection – this is a critical path group.

Standards writing

bullet

Managing group to review master plan

bulletRisk analysis and assessment (should include cost/benefit analysis)

Three subcommittees were established in December to begin work: Managing, Algorithm and Risk Assessment. Charters defining the purpose and scope of work for each subcommittee have been drafted and discussed through an extensive Email exchange of views. The charters are relatively stable and should provide a good basis to begin work at the next meeting in New Orleans on January 15th and 16th. Our calendar of events will be maintained to alert readers to all future meetings, as well as other meetings related to substation automation development.
